  “Sweet Thing” is a bit of a throw-back to all of the one-hit-wonders from the 90’s I loved as a kid. During the heyday of grunge, it seemed like every week there was a quirky single on the radio (WHFS for my Maryland folks) by bands I had never heard of like Ruth Ruth, Loud Lucy, and Spacehog. All of these songs seemed to have incredibly unique vocal phrasings and guitar tones, and I’m certain that they influenced my songwriting quite a bit.
  
  I’m also a big fan of brevity in music, so I’m always happy when I get to release a song that’s under two minutes. The overall intention with shorter songs is that you try to pack as much variation and special little moments as you can into the shortest time possible to give the impression that the song is actually much longer. It’s a method that I don’t get to use too often, so I’m always happy when a song presents itself as being able to work well in a shorter format.
  
  While "Sweet Thing" may be a bit different from what you’d expect from a song by The National Pool, I also want to retain the freedom to follow whatever direction the music wants to go. Ultimately, I believe that’s what it truly means to be an artist. I’ve always been attracted to bands and artists that are versatile and not locked into any particular sound. John Frusciante, Arthur Russell, Kool Keith, and Ween come to mind as a few artists I enjoy who exemplify this. Although they may change genres, there remains a through-line of what makes that artist who they are and defines their particular sound. In that spirit, I’m releasing “Sweet Thing”. ... more
