about

“Make Our Own Stars” began in 2011 or 2012 as one of the countless tiny song ideas I tend to write and leave behind. I was having a lot of trouble sleeping at the time, and would often wake up at 4 am and begin working on music for lack of anything else to do. I found it to be a very interesting time of day to write since I wouldn’t really over-think things during the process. Since then, I always enjoyed going back to listen to the idea, but I was worried that it was too repetitive to develop into a full song. While that may still be the case with the final version, I figured I had to at least see the idea through to completion. I was also motivated to complete the song when I found out that one of my old bandmates from college liked it as well.

“Make Our Own Stars” uses a vocoder in a somewhat similar manner to “Better”, but this time I’ve backed it up with some additional vocal processing and went for a more understated approach. While “Better” featured vocoder on all of the vocal tracks, this song only uses it on one of the tracks during the chorus, and even that track is mixed down quite a bit. I also experimented with how far I could push MIDI, and the result is the crazy synth lead that comes and goes throughout the song. I was going for kind of a Jackson Pollock-type thing with the MIDI, and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.
